DESICCANT DEHUMIDIFIER

Creating Dry Climates

KINFOLK Desiccant Dehumidifier handles the  room air or ambient air and adsorb the moisture  thereby reducing and maintaining very low moisture content in the air required for any process or to achieve any room design conditions.

Principle of Dessicant Dehumidification

Principle based on the diagram

  • The dehumidifier consists of a desiccant rotor (which consists of desiccants with high affinity) which is rotated at a particular speed (RPH) by a small gear drive motor.
  • The dehumidifier is divided into process and reactivation segments, any portion of the rotor keeps moving towards the process and reactivation segments simultaneously. Both the segments are sealed by a high pressure silicon seals.
  • The process air (from room or ambient) is drawn by a blower through the larger segment which loses its moisture to the desiccants in the rotor which is called adsorption and goes out as dry air.
  • Another stream of ambient air which is preheated/heated to higher temperature (to reduce the RH) in the reactivation side is drawn in opposite direction by another blower to pass through the reactivation segment where the moisture is physically removed which is called desorption and vented out hence the desiccant rotor will not be saturated.
  • The portion of rotor from which the moisture is removed in reactivation segment will become ready for moisture adsorption again when it comes to the process segment.

Psychrometric Chart and Desiccant Dehumidification

Desiccant Dehumidification – The Science of Dry Air

  •  The psychrometric chart is one of the most fundamental tools used in air conditioning and humidity control (dehumidification) engineering. It provides a graphical representation of the physical and thermal properties of moist air — such as dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature, relative humidity, humidity ratio, enthalpy, and dew point temperature. By studying the movement of air conditions on this chart, one can clearly visualize how air is cooled, heated, humidified, or dehumidified in a process.

  •   In desiccant dehumidification, also known as chemical dehydration, the process air passes through a desiccant material that adsorbs or absorbs moisture directly from the air stream.
This is an energy-balanced process, where the removal of moisture releases heat — equivalent to the latent heat of vaporization of the extracted water. As a result, the air leaving the desiccant becomes warmer and significantly drier, following a downward-sloping path on the psychrometric chart that closely aligns with the wet-bulb line.
The exact slope of this line may vary slightly, depending on whether heat is stored, liberated, or absorbed within the desiccant material during regeneration and drying. This precise control of humidity makes desiccant systems ideal for low dew point applications where conventional cooling-based methods fail to achieve.
